Just a quick word splatter about this quarter's SRC: Th' Faith Healers were a beloved British noise-motorik outfit from the early days of Matador Records who evolved into the subsequent Quickspace. Brooklyn spazz-experiMENTALists Oneida have umpteen billion songs just like this one. Meatbodies are modern garage saviors along with Ty Segall, Fuzz, Thee Oh Sees, etc. Guitar/drums duo Japandroids excel at anthemic post-hardcore math rock. Oh, did I mention Ty Segal? Yeah. Aussies King Gizzard plan to put out THREE albums this year, each with its own "concept" (this one being microtonalism and supposedly played on specially-designed guitars). Prolific much? Norwegians Rancho Relaxo have mastered every sub-genre of psychedelic tropes and put their own stamp on it. The Warlocks are an LA collective that have been around forever and always been consistent (and no they're not the early incarnations of the Velvet Underground or the Grateful Dead, despite sharing the same name). A.R. Kane + 14 Iced Bears = quintessential but obscure British shoegazers. Now some healthy nepotism: Michael And The Machines are my buddy Michael Padilla's Nevada City latest venture, the Spiral Electric are my buddy Clay Andrews' SF psych monsters, Jah Wobble And Keith Levene are the bassist and guitarist, respectively, from the original Public Image Ltd. (no, I don't know them, but this is a Beatles cover, of all things!), and the Len Brown Society is my old band from Oakland/SF/Long Beach CA (I played bass). The next three acts feature strong women singers/frontpersons, a current fetish of mine: Cincy's Wussy, the Brits known as Wolf Alice, and young LA upstarts Nightmare Air. All three are EPIC live. Then we have some experiMENTAL electronica-esque tracks from the mighty Mogwai and subversive Radian, not to mention not one but TWO Led Zep tributes from the singular DJ Spooky. All wrapped up with some truly outsider art from Tarantel's Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. So suck it up, spacerockers! It's what for breakfast!
